Burger Board!

My view from my seat - notice the Expeditor on the far right!

Before having the opportunity to go see Jamie Oliver in conversation with Matt Galloway, I had the privilege of going to Marben on Wellington. It was a complete surprise when I came from school to find that my mother was taking me out for dinner and to Massey Hall to see Jamie after!

We were seated in Marben’s relaxed dining room under dim lighting. The waiter came over and I immediately asked him if their meat was organic. Not only did he tell me that the meat was from Dingo Farms, but that they also butcher it in house. I guess he could see the enthusiasm on my face, because then he suggested that we moved to the chef’s table, which is basically a bar, practically IN the kitchen. We were greeted with chefs introducing themselves to us and talking about their food. A wooden board with house baked bread was soon brought over to us with oil, vinegar and Maldon Salt. It was fun to watch the different staff make charcuterie boards. All of the chefs had a different style of plating them and now it’s inspired me to play with my mustards when creating dishes.

While sitting at the chef’s table, I found my new dream job in a restaurant — The Expeditor! (insert theme music). Best. Job. Ever. He was in charge of keeping the kitchen running and in order, and keeping everyone working hydrated (he served them big cups of water with lime on them), and is also in charge of all of the servers. So, basically, without the expeditor, the whole restaurant would fall apart!

My mother ordered the Lobster Guacamole, without the lobster, so they gave her beautiful roasted beets instead. The guacamole came topped with a spicy tomato compote and cilantro sprouts, and some freshly grilled tortillas. I must say that the flavours blended together like a symphony orchestra! She also ordered chili and garlic rapini which I nicknamed the Happy Rapini, since, as you might notice in the picture, she looked really happy the whole time she was eating it!

I ordered the burger. I don’t usually eat meat (we don’t have any at home), but when I go out, if it’s organic, I do love a good burger, and this one, was almost as good as my current favourite from Simple Bistro. It arrived cooked perfectly and cut in half (smart and easier to eat!), and on a board alongside an old fashioned measuring cup full of french fries and some purple slaw. I didn’t ask, but I suspect the ketchup was Heinz (more on this problem I have at many restaurants another time!), but the mustard was from my favourite brand, Kozlik’s. The burger was so great, and very filling too, I didn’t even finish my fries. I loved my dinner and there was so much more on the menu that I would try, so I will definitely be back soon! Special thanks to Chef Rob, who was very nice to me.

I hope you all enjoyed my review and some of you try to make it to Marben sometime. They support the farmers, and we need to support farmers!
