Kale is a cute little cafe just north of the Yonge Eglinton Centre. It is a bright little space with big windows and art that features none other than…..KALE! There’s a hot buffet, a salad bar and a fridge full of food and drink. It’s not a full-serve restaurant, it’s a help yourself scene, but there are plenty of tables. I imagine that at lunch time, it must get very busy, since the area is always packed, and it’s really the only place in the area that serves real food (although, big news is that Fresh will be opening on Eglinton in 2013!). Kale’s food is all vegan, organic and macrobiotic (I don’t like to trust Wikipedia, but I needed some definition, and you might too).
Because you can take out, or sit down, there is the option of real dishes and cutlery or compostable ones. I love seeing that. I first chose to have a little veggie chili with TVP. It was very good, with just the right kick. There was a choice of Shepherd’s Pie, plenty of veggies, tofu, and a dozen or so other hot options (Their menu changes daily, based on what’s in season and freshest). The salad bar also looked great and you pay for everything by weight. I also got a black bean, spicy hummus, avocado (I love avocado!) and greens wrap to-go (I was still so full from my huge breakfast at the market that morning), and a chocolate cupcake (only good if you are used to gluten-free baked goods; don’t say I didn’t warn you). My mom and I shared an AMAZING coconut lime cookie – if they have them when you are there, I highly recommend it. My mom also got a big organic grapefruit and cucumber juice, which she downed really quickly (I like green juices, and they make all kinds but I wasn’t in the mood for one, but I’d go back when I’m in the area again!).
I’m definitely coming back to Kale again! Perfect for pre- or post- Indigo visits!
