It’s just a coincidence that I’ve been writing about a lot of vegan bakeries lately! But I must admit, I love a good dessert, especially the kind without junk that taste totally amazing!
Kelly’s Bake Shoppe just opened in Burlington, Ontario on December 8th, 2012, and we drove out there to celebrate. Kelly and Erinn’s desserts are deliciously addictive and mind-blowingly good!
Before the grand opening at Kelly’s, we stopped in around the corner from the beautiful new bakery at Kind Food (which is owned by the same really, super kind family). It’s all vegan, and they are well known for their sandwiches, like the BLAT or the Reuben. The BLAT is made with tempeh bits that taste just like bacon and are great and crunchy, perfectly ripe avocado, lettuce, tomato, and their vegan mayo! The Reuben is made with grilled and marinated tempeh, Daiya cheese, sauerkraut, and housemade russian dressing on buckwheat chia bread. Both sandwiches were enjoyed by my family, but I suggest eating them there (we did) because they are packed high and the sauces ooze out (in a good way) and taste better while the bread is freshly toasted out of the oven, they also both came with a great little organic side salad! They have a self-serve fridge full of kombucha, Caveman Foods water kefir (my brother drank most of it, we’re still teaching him about sharing), and their other foods like tempeh chili and macaroni and cheese (which was worth me taking home, it was so good!!). If you go, check out the floor, because it’s covered with pictures and information about famous vegans and vegetarians.
Off we went to Kelly’s Bakeshop around the corner where there was already a huge lineup of people waiting to get in on opening day. They bake DELICIOUS vegan, gluten-free cupcakes that are free of lots more things, so here’s how they put it on their website: “GLUTEN-FREE VEGAN DAIRY-FREE EGG-FREE BUTTER-FREE PEANUT-FREE SOY-FREE CASEIN-FREE TRANSFAT-FREE CHOLESTEROL-FREE LARD-FREE PRESERVATIVE-FREE ARTIFICIAL COLOUR-FREE”. Crazy, huh? Their famous Mile-High Brownie (chocolate cake and icing, whipped cream, another chocolate brownie, and chocolate fudge sauce) is also insanely stupendous – in fact, I’m craving one right now! Kelly and her daughter Erinn, the owners, run the show over there. They both are very nice, bake everything and will help you choose the desserts best for you. I highly recommend the mint chocolate chip cupcake – it’s a chocolate cupcake topped with minty icing and completely covered in tons of baby chocolate chips! They also have very yummy sandwich cookies stuffed with icing. It is a relatively small space (compared to a restaurant), but, as the old saying goes, “Good things come in small packages”. The bakery/kitchen is a roomy space where they bake and decorate all their great magic. They make all their desserts by hand, and even ice and decorate them themselves! If you’re in the area, or you just happen to want to go there, check out Kelly’s Bakeshoppe in Burlington! It’s worth the drive from Toronto! And if the like the colour pink, you are going to love their decor. They are going to have organic teas and coffee.
I look forward to my next visit to Burlington. Let me know if you have been there or go and what you enjoyed!
