Lesia and I at Brickworks

When you eat, it’s important to know where your food comes from.

If you saw how a tomato was grown and got to your plate, you would choose real tomatoes grown by real people close to here.  You should learn about where your chocolate, sugar (and everything) comes from to make sure it’s not something that can make you sick or hurt other people. Factory farming is also a very bad, and very gross thing (I recommend you read the Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan – I read the Junior Edition in Grade 4 and it changed the way I looked at food).

I have written about lots of restaurants in Toronto who care about food and their ingredients (and there are more all of the time!!), but there are few dessert places in Toronto that care. Bakeries that use organic ingredients, fair-trade ingredients and no refined sugars are hard to find. I like very good vegan baking myself! Sadly, one of Toronto’s incredible bakeries is about to go out of business. LPK’s Culinary Groove announced their tragic news a few weeks ago, on November 16th, 2012. If you haven’t read Lesia’s (the owner) touching letter, you really should, but have some tissues ready, because, like I did, you will probably cry. PLEASE shop with her over the next weeks at the farmers’ markets and sample how delicious her desserts and sandwiches etc are, because soon they won’t be made for us anymore, and she needs our full support right now to pay for stuff.

So, I’m asking you, and so is Lesia, to please keep supporting good people who believe in local, organic farming and food, so we get more of these great places opening  in Toronto (and everywhere), not fewer!!!

My suggestions for amazing bakeries in Toronto include (and let me know if there are more that qualify!):

Bunner’s Bakeshop

Sweets From The Earth

Tori’s Bakeshop

Kelly’s Bake Shoppe (from Kind Food) opening this weekend in Burlington
