I love pizza. And, I really love going out for really good pizza (if you follow my blog you will have read reviews on Libretto on Ossington, Libretto on the Danforth, Strada 241, Aprile Bambina Cucina, Villa and others). BUT, the best review I can give is to our homemade pizza, especially when my whole family makes them together. There’s something that just tastes amazing about your food when you’ve had fun making it!
We were going to go out, but after searching for a new restaurant in Toronto to go to that would please everyone in our family, and that would have a table on a Saturday night (couldn’t find one!), we decided to stay at home and whip up some pizza creations of our own.
We usually drink water, or fresh organic juices, and sometimes as a treat Tonica Kombucha, Rise Kombucha or coconut water but for this pizza night, we made our own soda in our glass carafe Soda Stream (avoid their syrups because they are toxic) and flavoured it with Meredith’s Ginger Syrup (awesmazing flavour – like a strong gingerale) and another batch with Royal Rose raspberry syrup we bought at Tori’s a while ago.
We made 3 large pizzas, one vegan and two with a little sheep’s milk cheese, with a whole bunch of great toppings (see below), but because it was last minute, we didn’t have as many things as we’d normally have, but it was still great! We also made 2 crusts into great green garlic bread! The secret ingredient is…parsley! Trust me, parsley and garlic is a wonderful ingredient pairing!
Try buying new things from a farmers’ market and making adventurous or simple meals with your family, it’s so much fun to do together and then eat together!
Often we use Ezekiel Wraps as our pizza crusts, but we had Sha Sha Kamut and Spelt Crusts as well as Sticklings crusts in our kitchen. Other toppings that we luckily happened to have:
Marvellous Edibles Pepper Pickles and BBQ sauce
Thomas Lavers C and D Onion Jam
fresh parsley
Kind Organics Microgreens
leftover black lentils
our garden’s own garlic
Swiss Chard
Sosnicki’s purple onion
Monforte Sheep’s Milk Cheese Curds and Toscano
Try everything and anything you like! At Villa in Toronto, I topped my pizza with avocado and it was unexpectedly great!!
