Get this, Camros Organic Eatery is 100% organic, vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free and freshly hand-made, 0% processed, 0% fried, and their food contains no preservatives, trans-fat, canned ingredients, white sugar, white salt and white flour, so, how could it be anything but awesmazing?! It’s also a great spot for vegans, and they have LOTS of raw choices, too. What I didn’t expect was how incredibly nice the owners, who also work hard to make the food, would be when I was there. Both Mojdeh and Bijan spent a lot of time explaining how much they care about health, food, and while I was eating, Bijan was explaining to my mother all about their spices, their food inspiration and the deep history of Persian cooking.
They told me that their best selling dish was by far their Kale Salad with shredded carrots, beets and lemon tahini dressing. I can vouch for how good it is as I enjoyed a large portion of it on a plate with saffron rice and an absolutely impeccable Lentil stew with a crazy good blend of flavours (I had a large second helping!). My mother loved her Watercress Soup – a hot blend of watercress, onion, coriander, potato, celery, leeks, carrot, sweet potato, parsnip, broccoli, green lentil, coriander seed, turmeric, himalayan crystal salt, and coconut oil. And yes, they list every single ingredient in every dish they serve, isn’t that amazing?! They also have a sign up telling everyone where they source their ingredients from, and I was super impressed that they even have their own little organic farm listed as a source of their ingredients!
They have an organic juice bar, and juice on command, so you know it’s fresh!
I was also excited to see that there was plenty of reverse osmosis filtered water at no charge that we could help ourselves to, in real glasses! Anything they have that is single-use, is compostable AND they actually compost (did you know that if you use compostable stuff, but throw it in the regular old garbage it’s garbage and not compost??). They also have a ton of signs up that remind everyone how amazing it is to eat organic, and eat real food (see pictures below for some).
They have a ton of desserts, not all are vegan, but they have something for everyone, including raw, vegan sweets. I chose the BIGGEST cookie I have ever seen or eaten. It was a spelt raisin cookie, and remarkably, after the big meal that I ate, I managed to almost eat the whole thing!! The most impressive thing about this cookie besides it’s large, square size and shape, was that it was baked in a solar powered oven, wouldn’t you have been very, very intrigued too?
Mojdeh and Bijan encouraged me to come back during the week when they have even more of a variety of dishes, but I was going back here anyway, and will as often as I have the opportunity. Based on the number of handwritten testimonials pinned up on their board, it seems that lots of people feel the same way that I now do about Camros!
Ironically, just before I ate at Camros, I posted a list of criteria for my ideal restaurant, and besides not taking reservations (my #4 of 14 on the list), they meet or surpass the other 13!! Camros Eatery is a great place to stop by if you are around Yonge and Bloor for good, healthy, comfort food that tastes good while you are eating it and makes you feel great afterwards (they have a sign up that communicates that, too!).
