Pyramid Ferments

It’s no secret that I love my Saturday mornings at Brickworks Farmers’ Market – there’s always great, real food to be enjoyed, all year round. In February and March, the market is at it’s sparsest in terms of produce, but it makes me (and my family) try a lot more things that are preserved or stored.

During the summer of 2012, Pyramid Ferments joined the market. Pyramid Farm is committed to practicing sustainable, natural and eco-friendly methods of agriculture (love that, of course!). They use no harmful inputs, herbicides or pesticides and follow organic methods of farming. My mother started buying from them right away, and has pretty much every week since. She absolutely loves their Spicy Kimchi and says it’s the best kimchi ever. I have to admit, as open-minded as I am when it comes to food, and as many flavours and textures that I like, there is no place for kimchi on my palette. PLUS, our whole house fills with the smell of repressed farts whenever my parents open it, and the smell lingers for a long while too! I have learned to put up with it because it is opened so much around here. If you like kimchi and kraut, you should get to the market and try the ton of varieties they have to offer each week. I will try it occasionally to see if my palette has changed! I do love pickles and those are in the same category of food!

My sister absolutely adores Pyramid’s lemon balm and echinacea kombucha as well – a good followup drink to her crepe or dumpling breakfast! If you’ve never tried kombucha, I suggest you do – it’s a great bubbly drink!! Don’t try comparing it to pop, because the only thing they have in common is that they are both fizzy!

This past week, the really nice people at the Pyramid table asked us if we had ever tried their eggs. They are hardboiled eggs and pickled in either herbs or kimchi brine. The eggs are from their own organic farm animals and they make everything themselves and bring it to market all the way from Prince Edward County, so we had to try them! I wasn’t completely excited to try them, but once I took a bite, I was blown away by the flavour and immediately chopped them up and put them on a big bed of Kind Organic Microgreens and enjoyed them for lunch.

Here’s a paragraph from the Pyramid Facebook Page – “Pyramid Farm and Ferments practices the traditional art of lacto-fermentation to create a high quality, handcrafted, local, raw and cultured product.” I suggest you suck up the smell and try what they make! It’s a whole new way to “Go with your gut!”.
