This isn’t a full review, because I was on a field trip in Stratford with my class, and at the last-minute was given some free time, so I immediately went into the nearest shop to ask for directions to Monforte’s new restaurant. Unfortunately, with my limited time, and not being prepared, I didn’t quite capture the full effect – so, apologies for the lack of pictures and descriptions. But, I can tell you after indulging in a grilled cheese sandwich with wild leek pesto and apple butter, that it’s worth me going back to try more!
The space is mostly made out of highly polished wood with a big cooler of Monforte cheeses for purchase (my favourite is their Waltzing Matilda and the Sheep’s Milk Pecorino Fresco), and you can eat in comfortably, as there are multiple tables. It was nice to see it busy at lunch time today. The menu is small, but clearly using local, organic and wild ingredients (hurray!!!) – the soup today was asparagus, and they also featured an organic greens salad with wild chamomile vinaigrette, simple and it looked very good, these items change often. There aren’t even menus, just a big chalkboard menu, which is great, because saving paper is a great thing!
For those of you in the area or going to visit, they have Water Buffalo ice cream, which I’ve never tried, and would have if I had time! A perfect pre- or post-theatre snack!
It was fun to see Monforte outside of the Farmers’ Market, where I see Ruth almost every Saturday! I will be back soon! Congratulations Monforte!
