The Root

A few weeks ago, my family and I went on a road trip to visit our cousins in Michigan, so naturally, before going, I had to research and find a good restaurant to eat at while there. Luckily, my cousin knows what I like to eat and sent me a few links, and after I called and asked my usual questions, I decided that The Root was the place we would go. It was amazing to make a call and find out that they could accommodate all of our needs, and they even had vegan and gluten-free things right on their menu! No need even for special requests once there. We need more of THAT in Toronto!

When we arrived, I was surprised at how big the restaurant was, because from the outside it didn’t look that big. It was also very modern, clean and beautiful, so I was excited to sit down, and my brother and I checked in with hostess and got our big table.

My cousins and parents ordered organic wine and beer, my sister, brother and I stuck with water. The menu had so many options, but I already had decided that I was going to have their organic burger. Unfortunately, they did not have house made or organic ketchup, which, if you’ve read my blog before, you know really bugs me! Everyone really liked their appetizers, especially my mom, sister and cousins who had vegan roasted cauliflower salad and squash soup. I enjoyed a charcuterie board with my cousins Sam and Warren and dad, although my mother scooped our szechuan house pickles!

The burger was awesmazing (although Harbord Room in Toronto has nothing to be worried about, it didn’t come close to the goodness of that one and others locally!). And overall everyone was very happy with their dishes. It was great that they had vegan options with protein, like quinoa, lentils, and beans. The flavours used were very interesting as well, and the dishes weren’t boring – my dad’s red lentil stew had indian spices and coconut involved. Everyone really enjoyed the roasted brussel sprouts, too, especially my cousin Lindsay!

Because my mom ordered the vegan tasting menu, she got a dessert of vegan ice cream sandwiches that we all shared. They weren’t fabulous, but good to get something vegan on a regular menu! I suggest that they look into Luna and Larry’s instead of the coconut ice cream they used or made, as it was icy.

Overall, it was great to try a restaurant when in the Detroit area, especially with such a big menu and a comfortable, busy space with a good vibe. Thanks to my cousins for finding it, and to The Root Restaurant for feeding us all good, clean food. I can’t wait for my next visit to see my family to try other places!
