It’s no secret that I love organic, cold-pressed juice, so I was delighted to visit Revitasize, a new juice bar at Dufferin and Clark, north of Toronto. It’s a pretty large space with a lot going on. They do have a few little tables along their windows for people to be able to drink their juices, açai bowls and smoothies, and also dig into the large rainbow salads they have ready-made, or their sweet but healthy select desserts.
The owner, Rachel Spivak, was almost insistent on giving us more than just organic juice. She explained that she didn’t want me to drink from the bottle itself (even though it is glass), but through a straw. I don’t normally take straws, because I try to conserve as much as possible and avoid single-use items, but she made a very compelling case, and taught me something I didn’t know, and maybe you don’t either. Sipping through a straw helps to slow down the rate of consumption and increases the exposure time of the juice to the salivary enzymes, allowing for better assimilation of the nutrients into your body. Cool, right?
I normally have a green juice, but something else caught my eye at Revitasize – a charcoal lemonade. Although I hope I don’t have that much to detox, the charcoal really helps with that! I loved that it was grey in colour, and tasted really awesmazing.
My brother, sister, mother and father all enjoyed their juices, and everyone tried different things – they offer sweet, fruity, veggie packed and even spicy. Their juice menu is really interesting, but not everything is available all of the time, since they rotate through their menu based on what’s available. This is a very good thing, because you’ll always be able to try something new.
Sweet note: I highly recommend that you indulge in their chocolate, date, oat, banana “cookie”. It’s more like a giant hockey puck of cookie-ness. The best way to enjoy it, also by their recommendation, is if you warm it up in your oven/toaster oven, that way the chocolate chips melt and the whole thing becomes a decadent treat that’s even delicious for breakfast.
Thanks to Megan Khosroshahi for the brilliant recommendation to drive north to try this spot. We’ll definitely be back again soon!
