It’s better than any restaurant in so many ways….The Brickworks Farmers’ Market Local Food Court! Although it’s open year round, when Brickworks Market moves outside, there are more chefs, more vendors, more farmers and places and spaces to eat in the sunshine or the shade.
On Saturday, May 7th, the market moved outside for the season, and will be there right through the fall harvest! The outdoor market under the tin roof at Evergreen Brickworks is now every Saturday from 8am to 1pm instead of the winter opening at 9am. I urge you to go, rain or shine and support the farmers, and yourselves! You can go for a walk or hike and make a morning or day out of it, there is something for everyone for breakfast, brunch, lunch and to take home to eat well for the whole week.
At the back of the market (based on where we enter from), there is the “Local Food Court”, which includes something for everyone to eat – whether you want a breakfast sandwich, a crepe, chocolate, dumplings, mac and cheese, full vegan and gluten-free meals, salads, oatmeal, corn tortillas, french fries, empanadas, cookies and more, depending on the week, the chef and the season. If you are looking to quench your thirst, choose from kombucha on tap, green smoothies, coffee, herbals teas, hot and cold chocolate, and there is even an Ontario selection of beer and wine!
Almost every week, I eat not one, but two breakfasts which usually sustains me until dinner – one dish from chef Doug McNish (review from 2013) and one dish from chef Bashir at My Little Dumplings (review from 2013). Their organic menus are constantly changing in order to use what’s in season and what their imaginations want them to create for that week, so make sure you try as much as you can from their kitchens! Make sure you always ask about the ingredients being used because not everything in the Local Food Court is organic, and just because it’s at a farmers’ market, it’s not necessarily clean!
I’ve been going to this market for the better part of my life, every week that is possible, I hope you will too! I’ve never left hungry, and always leave happy.
(here’s a video I made 4 years ago about why you should visit a farmers’ market today!)
