The Chufa Co. Tigernut Milk

We like to shop different grocery stores in Toronto, because we always like to look for new products and try new things. One day at Fiesta Farms, we stumbled upon a great looking new milk, but it had the term “nut” in it, so we assumed at first glance that it wouldn’t be ok to bring home since my sister has severe nut allergies. But, our family rule is to be curious and read all labels, and were very excited to learn that a tiger nut is not actually a nut, it’s an ancient superfood and a tuber, which is a root vegetable. AND, it so happens that they make a delicious dairy-free milk!

We bought all 4 flavours and I ran a taste test with my family.

I thought the maple flavour was a bit too sweet, but my little brother chose it as his favourite and enjoyed it with the new cereal that we tried!

I liked the Original and the Coffee/Cacao flavour very much, my sister liked the Original the best. My father like the Coffee/Cacao the best.

My mother and I both liked the Valencian Horchata the best. It was slightly sweet with a hint of Organic Ceylon Cinnamon, Maple Syrup and Organic Vanilla. I could personally drink it every day.

The Chufa Co. claims that their dairy alternative fuels a healthy gut, but I think it fuels everything, and most importantly tastes great. They also recommend adding it to things – baking and smoothies etc, but I think it’s great to drink on its own. I do wish it came in a glass bottle, but otherwise, this is a great product to try. I bet it would make a great base for a popsicle or even fudgsicle this summer.

The company says this about the health of tigernuts: “Tigernuts have a very impressive health profile. They are one of the leading sources of magnesium and they contain healthy fats, like oleic acid. They are a good source of Vitamin E and C. And they are packed full of fiber and the non-soluble fiber, resistant starch (which we think is the best part of tigernuts).”

They are a local Toronto company, and use organic ingredients to make these great milks. Try it whether you are dairy-free, you are allergic to nuts, or not!
