Eva’s Original Chimneys

Ok, so Chimneys are not exactly healthy, but they are absolutely, awesmazingly, delicious and they are made with mostly organic and natural ingredients – in their basic form! What is a Chimney, you might ask? “Chimneys (known as Kürtőskalács in Hungarian or Trdelník in Czech) are delicious and unique, bread-like freshly baked Hungarian pastries, named after their hollow, cylindrical shape. They have a satisfying crunch on the outside and a soft, fluffy dough on the inside.”

I first tried Chimneys from their food truck parked at Brickworks Farmers’ Market around 62 weeks ago (according to this Instagram photo), and just last week, due to the overwhelming love for them in Toronto, they opened a bricks and mortar location on Bloor Street West near Bathurst Street.

When approaching Eva’s Original Chimneys, I could immediately tell that they had put a lot of thought into designing the space. Their glass front window clearly displays the chefs hard at work, handmaking their delicious dough and wrapping it into Chimney after Chimney – good luck walking by and not noticing! Upon walking in, you’ll be standing in a narrow space with a view of the baking of the Chimneys on their traditional-style, open rotisserie grill. Even from the other side of the glass, you’ll smell how absolutely delicious they are, and this is when you’ll likely have trouble deciding what to order!

There is a huge menu hanging from the ceiling with large pictures of all of the options, but I caution you, that once you go beyond the basic options, the ingredients are no longer organic and “clean”. It’s funny because Justin, the owner (who is a REALLY nice guy), remembered me as the kid who called him out on using Nutella when I first tried Chimneys from his food truck! My dad and I both opted for the classic cinnamon sugar-coated Chimney Cake, which is served hot and you have to experience it to get the full concept and deliciousness. It is way better than any donut that I have tried! My little brother, always wanting more than everyone else, got a Chimney Cone filled to the brim with coconut whipped cream. His smile did not go away for a very long time, maybe not until his sugar coma set in! 🙂

Eva’s Original Chimneys is worth your travel to try! Although they do not use a ton of organic ingredients right now, hopefully if we all ask, they will start using more in the future! It’s not gluten-free, but the basic Chimney Cake is vegan, and made from only 7 simple, organic and natural ingredients, and that counts for a lot!

Go enjoy watching your Chimney Cake or Chimney Cone bake before your eyes as you wait!
