The Chufa Co. has been around since 2014 making their awesmazing tiger-nut drinks (review here). When I heard in early September that the owner, Andrea, was planning on creating a tiger-nut ice cream, I was so excited! By the way, a tiger-nut is NOT a nut, it is a super tuber and this product is not only dairy-free, but is also organic and nut-free! When you read the ingredients on the label, you’ll be very impressed, and they make claims that this is the “new non-dairy”, packed with prebiotic fiber – very good news for a dessert!
I first tried the ice cream at the CHFA show in the fall of 2017 where I discover and try as much as I can (see my review here). The Chufa Co was proudly scooping and launching three flavours – vanilla, chocolate brownie, and strawberry. I am not a big fan of fruity flavours of anything, so the strawberry wasn’t really for me, but based on how great the vanilla and chocolate were, I’m sure the strawberry is equally as AMAZING if you like that kind of flavour! The chocolate was my favourite but only because it’s pretty difficult to beat a flavour with chunks of fudgy brownies – but the overall flavour of the vanilla was exceptional, and I love that there are specks of vanilla bean in every spoonful. Vanilla sounds boring, so you’ll likely be as surprised as I was when you try it! I guess quality really wins over everything always!
At Shoresh’s Taking Root charity event in November, The Chufa Co. was generously scooping an UNBELIEVABLE mint chip flavour that I am still dreaming about, and over the holidays enjoyed every spoonful of their seasonal Candy Cane Crunch (I could eat an entire pint of this in one sitting) and the eggnog packed with chunks of gingerbread cookie, which was also great.
Many of my friends and our family friends who eat dairy are not always satisfied or impressed with the organic and vegan ice creams we serve, but they have ALL loved this tiger-nut based treat. If you have an aversion to coconut or dislike including soy in your diet, this is your solution too!
The awesmazing pints of The Chufa Co.’s frozen dessert can currently be found (if not sold out) at The Big Carrot and Yamchops in Toronto, but The Chufa Co. has big plans to expand this year! You can also enjoy an organic float at Live Organic Bar that combines a large glass of Crazy D’s prebiotic soda, a large scoop of The Chufa Co.’s frozen dessert and a sprinkle of hemp seeds! You can also order direct from the company if you need a lot, and you probably do need a lot! If you go to the smart retailers or restaurants working with the Chufa Co.’s tiger nut drinks or ice cream, explore the other great products and food they have for you, you’ll be excited with your finds, and can support many small, independent businesses and the organic, local food movement too – that benefits us all!
