My family has been buying organic produce from Jessie and Ben Sosnicki for a very long time at the Brickworks and Dufferin Grove farmers’ markets (and even Wychwood years ago!). Aside from growing the BEST sweet corn (no gmos, no spray!!) and heirloom tomatoes in the area, this family farm has a commitment to organic and pesticide-free farming – something that is very uncommon these days and sets them apart from most farmers! Jessie, Ben, and their kids all have the best energy and are so kind, as are the team working with them at markets. My mom always says that you can taste their kindness and goodness in their produce and food!
Last week, my family had the opportunity to get some of their organic perogies, only available seasonally. They come in three flavours – onion, kale, and potato (vegan), potato and cheddar, and potato, cheddar, and onion. We opted for the vegan version, which is also made with organic spelt, and enjoyed them immensely at dinner tonight. My mom sauteed thinly sliced onions with a little avocado oil on low heat for a pretty long time and then deglazed the pan with a little balsamic before placing the pierogies to heat up on the bed of onions.
I have to say, these are WAY bigger than any other pierogi stuffed with the perfect filling – the smoothness of the potato combined with the dark green kale made for an amazing flavour and texture combination along with the caramelized onions, chopped parsley.
It is always awesome to try new dishes actually made by local and organic farmers with the ingredients they grow themselves – I can’t wait to try their vegan cabbage rolls soon that are waiting in our freezer!
Check Jessie and Ben Sosnicki out at the Dufferin Grove Farmers’ Market on Thursdays and the Brickworks Farmers’ Market on Saturday and support a local farm with a commitment to doing good! Jessie also posts farm updates on her Instagram which I recommend you follow!
