Steambox Dumplings is trying to change the dumpling game while fulfilling our cravings and love for the traditional treat!
Steambox was born from the tradition of sharing great food with great people, which is the most fun way to eat, in my opinion. All of their dumplings are made by hand, and when you look at the photos below (just taken on my phone), you will see how beautiful they are.
Although Steambox uses Ontario meat and poultry, and local produce whenever possible, they are not (yet?!) organic. They do offer a wide (and awesmazing!) selection of vegan and gluten-free dumplings, and we ordered 4 different ones to try out for pick up at Death in Venice on Queen Street.
They offer a gluten-free option made from rice flour, millet flour, tapioca starch, and potato starch. This is a really unique combination that even features protein from the millet! Kudos to Steambox for offering such an innovative take on gluten-free (and they taste good!!)!
We chose to pan steam them, and used a little bit of avocado oil, then water and put a lid on them for a few minutes. They were served hot and golden, and my family and I devoured them really quickly, which explains the lack of plated photos after they were cooked!
We enjoyed four of their 6 vegan varieties:
Citrus Squash – creamy butternut squash with zesty orange, lime juice, and a hint of chili. My family liked them, but they weren’t a favourite.
BBQ Lentil – brown lentils mixed with caramelized onions, corn, and carrots in a smoky BBQ sauce! This one was my favourite, and I think I could eat a whole package by myself!!
Miso Mushroom – a blend of mushrooms with miso sauce. My second favourite, and another really amazing flavour!
Veggie – Tofu, quinoa, chickpeas, fresh veg, and spices. This was the favourite of both my brother and my sister – they are AWESOME!
There are also two other veggie flavours (Red Coconut Curry and Yam Chipotle) which I will have to try another time!
Steambox Dumplings are a great way to spice up any meal with a ton of different flavours – enjoy them pan-fried or steamed for a delicious taste treat to be enjoyed by all! Pick up a few bags and share them with friends or family – you’ll be supporting a small business with a lot of heart and eating some REALLY GOOD dumplings!
